Two boys teams from Vancouver West Soccer Club won championships as Washington’s state tournament for recreation teams concluded over the weekend at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila.
In the boys under-19 division of the Sports Authority Washington Youth Soccer Recreation Cup, Vancouver West Millennium defeated Central Kitsap Firehawks 2-0 in Sunday’s championship game. On Saturday, the Millennium beat Cascade Ossello in a penalty-kick tiebreaker after playing to a 2-2 draw in a semifinal match. Vancouver West outscored Cascade 4-3 in the shootout.
In the under-14 boys division, Vancouver West FC United won the title by defeating the Redmond 99 Fireballs in a penalty-kick tiebreaker. After the teams battled to a 1-1 draw in Saturday’s championship match, Vancouver West won the shootout 3-2.
Earlier on Saturday, Vancouver West beat the Silver Lake Blasters 3-2 in the semifinal round.
Two Vancouver area teams advanced to the finals but lost.
In the boys under-15 tournament, Vancouver United Cheetahs beat South Mason Real Madrid 3-0 in the semifinals, then lost to the Hoquiam Harbor Sounders in the final, 6-1.
In the girls under-19 tournament, the Vancouver West Pumas lost Sunday’s championship match to the North Bend Fusion, 4-0. In a Saturday semifinal, the Pumas won 5-0 over the Tracyton Cougars.
Four girls teams and two boys teams from Clark County lost semifinal matches on Saturday. Those girls teams were the Vancouver United Screamers (under 11), the Vancouver West dynamite (under 14), the Vancouver United Blue Storm (under 15) and the Pacific Tigers (under 16). Boys teams losing semifinal matches were the Camas-Washougal Giants (under 11) and the Vancouver West Dragons (under 16).The Recreation Cup is the lowest competitive level of Washington Youth Soccer’s four state championship tournaments.
Middle school wrestling champions crowned
Covington had three individual champions and edged Frontier by 19 points on Saturday to win the Greater St. Helens League Middle School Wrestling Championships. The tournament was held at Union High School and involved wrestlers from the Evergreen Public Schools and the Camas School District middle schools.
Chad Doney of Covington won the title in the 75-pound weight class. Neithan Stanley was the champion at 106 pounds, Dan Barrera was the champion at 130 pounds and Drezdyn Lyons was the champion at 165 pounds. The Colts finished with 312 points to win the eight-school tournament.
Frontier champions were Noah Talavera (90 pounds), Calvin Buck (95), Ammon Garrison (112), Gregg Buzey (195) and Jakobb Railing (unlimited 2 weight class).
Liberty also had five champions: Gideon Malychewski (100 pounds), Quentin Adams (118), Rylan Thompson (124), Sam Malychewski (155) and Jace Thompson (175).
Skyridge champions were Matthew Pershing (70 pounds), Will Schultz (136), John Taylor (145) and Adam Noble (unlimited).
Cascade’s Tanner Craig was the champion at 80 pounds. Troy Ewers of Wy’East was the champion at 85 pounds.See the Community Sports Scoreboard for results of the championship matches and the list of top-six finishers at each weight.
Clark to host hoops clinic
The Clark College women’s basketball program will host a basketball skills camp for boys and girls Dec. 26-27 at the O’Connell Center.
For those in grades 3-5, the camp will run 8:30 to 11 a.m. both days and cost $50.
For students in grades 6-9, the camp will run noon to 4 p.m. and cost $80.
Former USC guard and Prairie High standout Ashley Corral, Clark women’s basketball Al Aldridge, and some of the current Penguins players will teach at the clinic.
