Maintenance lifts planned for I-5 Bridge

Repair work on the southbound span of the Interstate 5 Bridge will require up to three bridge lifts on Monday, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The lifts will allow workers to install a new roller on the bridge, replacing another that broke and had to be removed last month. Since then, crews have moved the southbound drawbridge at only half speed during lifts, causing longer traffic delays. Rollers help guide the bridge’s massive counterweights up and down when the drawbridge opens.

Monday’s lifts, as long as 20 minutes each, will happen between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., according to ODOT. That will allow workers to complete the work with enough daylight, and test the new roller.

Southbound drivers heading from Vancouver to Portland should expect delays while the span is lifted. The work won’t affect northbound traffic on I-5.
