The longest serving member of Evergreen Public Schools Tuesday announced her intent to resign at the end of December.
Joan Skelton, an 18-year veteran of the school board, said it was time to move on with a new set of priorities and focus on volunteering at the board’s evening meeting. The parent of five, and grandparent to 19, said focusing on her family factored into her decision.
Skelton is about halfway through her term, having won an unopposed re-election bid in 2011.
She started as a volunteer at the district before running for the District 2 position in 1995. She is one of two members remaining on the board who were part of a 10-year planning process for a bioscience and health care school that culminated this fall when HeLa High School opened.
She has also been active at the local and state leadership levels, serving several times as the board president, vice-president and legislative representative.
The board will formally adopt Skelton’s resignation at its Jan. 14 meeting. Members will announce the process for filling the remainder of her term at that time.
