Union High School closed this morning due to the failure of the school’s heating system to adequately heat all the buildings on the large campus. A crew is working on the boilers today, said Gail Spolar, district spokeswoman.

“We had intermittent heating issues out there for the last several days,” Spolar said. “Not all of the buildings are getting heat. If we can’t guarantee heat in all the buildings for all the kids at a reasonably comfortable level, Superintendent John Deeder decided to close the school today.”

The school said buses would arrive at 10 a.m. to return students to their homes. A number of students drive their own cars to school. The district was doing a robocall to all the parents of Union students to let them know about the school closure, Spolar said.

“Our hope is to have school at Union Tuesday,” Spolar said. “Barring freezing rain. We’re keeping our eye on the weather.”

More than 2,000 students attend Union High School, located on the far eastern boundary of Evergreen Public Schools.
