Hannah Kimsey took one shot during Concordia University’s game against Embry-Riddle of Florida in the NAIA national quarterfinals on Wednesday at Orange Beach, Ala.
The Columbia River High School graduate’s shot was on goal.
Then it was in the goal.
Kimsey’s blast at the far post in the 59th minute of a scoreless game on a pass through the penalty area from Jasmin Ayala was all the Cavaliers needed for a 1-0 victory and a place in Friday’s semifinals. The win avenged the team’s only loss of the season. Concordia (20-1-1), the No. 4 seed, will play top seed Lindsey Wilson of Kentucky in the semifinals.
The NAIA championship game is Saturday.
The Cavaliers defeated St. Thomas of Florida, 2-0, in the second round Monday. Concordia advanced to the NAIA quarterfinals for the third consecutive year and 11th time in the past 14 seasons.

Kate Lanz off to strong start at Portland State
Portland State senior guard Kate Lanz had a game-high 20 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high nine assists in the Vikings’ 75-67 win over Columbia on Saturday afternoon in the Stott Center.
Vancouver’s Lanz, a graduate of Portland’s Central Catholic High School, just missed her first career triple double.
She was 11 of 13 from the free throw line, scoring 20-plus points for the third time in five games this season for Portland State (2-3).
Lanz is the team’s leading scorer at 17.2 points a game, also averaging 5.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists.
Her sister Jackie, who played three seasons at Prairie High School before her senior season at St. Mary’s Academy in Portland, is a freshman guard who has appeared in one game for the Vikings.

WSU’s Knight named Pac-12 All-Academic
Washington State sophomore Abby Knight was named to the 2013 Pacific-12 Conference Cross Country All-Academic Honorable Mention women’s team.
An undeclared major, the Heritage High School graduate has a 3.24 cumulative grade point average.
