Southbound I-5 reopens in North Portland

Southbound Interstate 5 in North Portland has reopened after closing earlier this morning due to a crash.

The Oregon Department of Transportation reported that the interstate was closed for several hours this morning near Interstate 405. The crash, which involved a commercial truck, was announced by the agency just after 5 a.m.

Despite the closure, traffic on southbound I-5 in Vancouver moved steadily throughout the morning. Traffic on Interstate 205, however, was fairly heavy approaching Oregon.

“I think people got the message pretty early … Which is great, traffic on I-5 is flowing like it should be,” said Magan Reed, spokeswoman for the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Reed said that an offramp of I-205 closed in Gladstone, Ore. but that was likely not having much impact on Clark County motorists. “It certainly isn’t helping the commute,” Reed said.

ODOT reports that there is no estimate for reopening I-5 and advised motorists to expect the interstate to remain closed through the morning commute.

Arterial roadways such as state Highway 14, state Highway 500 and Mill Plain in Vancouver are clogging near I-205, Reed said.

“It’s a traffic nightmare this morning,” she said. “It’s such an interconnected system, it just creates a domino effect.”
