Community sports notes: Sattem named driver of year

Dave Sattem was of Camas was recognized as the driver of the year during the Woodburn Dragstrip awards dinner, which was held on Nov. 16.

Vancouver drivers Paul Comeau, Greg Heriford and Devon Hilton were also among those honored.

Comeau was the Hot Rod I classification champion for 2013. Heriford won the Street Machine I classification points title. Hilton won the dragster/roadster classification and also was a winner of the Northwest Wholesale Perfect Light Club Most .000s Award.

Austin Varner claimed the driver of the year award in the Junior Dragster category.

Elvon Kauffman of Keizer, Ore., was awarded the Woodburn Dragstrip Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions as a racer, a chaplain, and Woodburn Dragstrip office manager.

Youth rugby clinics slated in Battle Ground

Battle Ground Youth Rugby is hosting a free rugby clinic for boys and girls in grades 4-12 on three December Saturdays.

The camps will be 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Maple Grove Middle School. To participate, players should wear cleats, bring a bottle of water, and dress warm. Battle Ground Youth Rugby coaches will be present to run drills, play games and answer questions.

Registration also is open for league play in the spring. During the spring, teams will have two practices a week and will play local and away matches.

Grade 4-6 teams play non-contact matches. Grade 7-8 teams play seven-player tackle. High school boys and girls teams play 15-a-side tackle.

League matches start in early March and ends mid-May with playoff matches. Registration is open for all interested players. To learn more visit Rugbyoregon.com or email questions to bgyouthrugby@gmail.com.
