Have you seen the forecast for this week?
BRRRRRR.
Looks chilly.
Well, it’s a good thing this week kicks off the rest of the winter sports schedule. Winter sports equals indoor sports.
So what better way to stay warm than to head to a gym for a high school sports event.
Monday is the first day of basketball games in Clark County, and there is a full schedule that includes two girls-boys doubleheaders: Columbia River at Evergreen and Heritage at Mountain View. Both doubleheaders start with 5:30 p.m. girls games.
Those are nonleague games. League play for the 4A, 3A and 2A Greater St. Helens Leagues doesn’t begin until January.
You want a league game? How about Woodland at Toledo boys on Monday?
Yeah, when 18 of your 20 regular season games are league games — that’s what Trico League teams face — you got to get started on league play early.
The Prairie girls basketball team faces a tough opening week. The Falcons travel to play Skyview on Tuesday, then Prairie plays at Union on Friday. Skyview and Union are expected to battle for supremacy in the 4A GSHL.
Columbia River and Skyview renew their non-league rivalry on Friday with a doubleheader at Skyview. The boys take the early tip-off at 5 p.m.
And we have wrestling matches that include Washougal at Mountain View on Thursday and Union at Hudson’s Bay on Friday.
Boys swimmers will hit the pool for the GSHL Relay at Kelso on Friday.
And our first round of gymnastics meets will be held on Saturday at gyms around the area.
There is one outside event this week, if you are the outdoor type.
The Nike Cross Nationals cross country meet will be Saturday at Portland Meadows, and Camas’ Alexa Efraimson will be one of the leading contenders.
Last year, the race was run over a mud-clogged course because of heavy rains before the race. This year, the course will appear to be much drier. However, it will be much cooler. In fact, the race might be run in sub-freezing temperatures.
And, of course, there is one other indoor event: Camas vs. Chiawana in the 4A football state championship game in the Tacoma Dome on Saturday.
