A family of five was displaced after a fire broke out at a Ridgefield-area house Sunday night.
The fire started about 10:30 p.m. on an exterior porch and extended into the hallway of the house, located at 4117 N.E. 232nd St. in the Ridgefield area, according to Clark County Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Dawdy.
Crews from Clark County Fire & Rescue were first on scene and quickly doused the flames.
When the fire broke out, the family was asleep, Dawdy said. One person woke up to the sound of the fire, the other four heard the fire alarm, and all got out before firefighters arrived, he said.
“If it wasn’t for the working smoke detector, they could have easily been cut off by the fire,” Dawdy said. “The smoke detectors were essential.”
Vancouver Fire Department and Clark County Fire District 6 also responded and assisted with the fire.
Dawdy said that fire damage to the large house, which county records estimated at 3,946 square feet, was contained to the hallway and exterior of the house. Smoke damage, however, extended into the entire first floor, he said.
The family was able to stay with relatives Sunday night and will be displaced for some time, Dawdy said.
The Clark County Fire Marshals Office is investigating what caused the blaze.
