Edinson Volquez basically pitched himself into a pennant chase by pitching terribly.

Volquez signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers after being released by the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.

Volquez was the Padres’ opening day starter this season for the second straight year. He went 9-10 with a 6.01 ERA in 27 starts before getting released.

It’s further proof that the Dodgers are willing to pay anyone.

The latest target on the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s list: An 80-year-old weightlifter who was busted for steroids.

The agency that brought down Lance Armstrong announced a two-year suspension for Don Ramos of Colorado Springs, Colo., who tested positive for steroids while attempting to set a world record in his age group at the Pan American Masters Weightlifting Championships in June.

The suspension means Ramos can’t compete again until July 2015.
