Several hundred bicycle racers are expected at David Douglas Park in Vancouver on Saturday for the first in a series of cyclocross races.
The David Douglas Cross Race will feature 10 races for various ability and age levels, with racing scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Advance online registration closes at 10 p.m. today through the website cyclocross.gp, which has complete information about the race.
The races are sanctioned by the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association, and riders must be OBRA members to race. Registration on site costs $25, $10 for junior riders. David Douglas Park is at 1016 N. Garrison Road, just north of Mill Plain Boulevard.
Saturday’s races kick off a 10-race fall series called the Grand Prix Erik Tonkin. Six of the 10 races will be held in Clark County.
The race for the A-level riders, the fastest classification, is scheduled for 1 p.m.
A non-competitive kiddie kross race is free to enter for ages 12 and younger.
Cyclocross competitions are bicycle races over courses that include off-road terrain and obstacles that sometimes require riders to dismount and carry their bikes. Each race lasts for a set amount of time, usually 30 to 60 minutes depending on the level of competition. The rider who completes the most laps is the winner.
Saturday’s event is staged by Zone 5 Promotions in conjunction with the Vancouver Parks and Recreation Department.
