A broken water line at the Vancouver Public Schools’ community center caused extensive flooding, forcing the Boys and Girls Clubs to shift some of its programs.
The water line broke on Aug. 7 at the Jim Parsley Community Center, 4100 Plomondon St., in space leased by the Boys and Girls Clubs.
The flooded area was used by the Boys and Girls Clubs for elementary school-level programs; most of its participants attend Roosevelt, King and Ogden elementary schools.
The club is heading into a three-week break. When the 2013-14 school year begins and the program resumes, club activities will be held at those three elementary schools.
Upper-floor space, used for Boys and Girls Club teen programs, was not affected. Some space occupied by the nonprofit Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools also was damaged by the water.
The foundation is doing a back-to-school drive, and people who wish to contribute are asked to bring their donations to the front desk at the main entrance of the Jim Parsley Center, 2901 Falk Road.
Restoration work begins
Because the broken water line was an emergency, the school district was able to immediately hire a restoration contractor without going through the usual procurement process. The contractor helped district employees remove the water and begin mitigation activities, district spokeswoman Kris Sork said Thursday.
The cost to repair water damage will be charged to the general fund and will be covered by insurance, subject to a $10,000 deductible.
After district facilities officials evaluate the damage, which is planned for today, it likely will put the renovation project out to bid.
