‘Stuff the Bus’ school supply drive to benefit local students

A “Stuff the Bus” school supply drive to benefit kids in the Washougal School District is currently underway at Wal-Mart in Vancouver.

Donations can be made through Aug. 23 in large bins located just inside the front doors of the Wal-Mart located at 430 S.E. 192nd Ave., in Vancouver.

Donations being requested include the following: Backpacks, colored and No. 2 pencils, binders, 12-inch rulers, hand sanitizer, book covers, calculators, composition notebooks, 24-count boxes of crayons, black and white comp books, dry erase markers, highlighters, glue and glue sticks, pencil pouches and boxes, index cards, socks and underwear, pencil sharpeners, pens, pocketed foders, erasers, safety scissors, one subject notebooks, tissues, filler paper, storage bags and washable markers.

Donations will be distributed to students in need through the Washougal Schools Foundation.

EOCF childcare available at low or no cost

Young children in Clark County could be eligible for free preschool and childcare through Educational Opportunities for Children and Families.

The EOCF programs include center-based preschool for children ages 3 to 5 (priority given to 4-year-olds), home-based services for pregnant women and children up to age 5, and daycare for children ages one month to 5 years old.

Additional services include family support, special needs support and early intervention referrals for children ages birth to 3 years old.

Most classes begin in the fall, and there is no charge to eligible families.

Classes take place at several locations around Clark County.

Locals showing animals at Skamania County Fair

Washougal sisters Sammy and Sydney Mederos are showing their pigs at the Skamania County Fair Market Auction, and are encouraging local residents to come and support them.

Sammy, 9, will show Marvin the sheep and Miss Tinkles the pig.

Sydney, 13, will show her pigs, Stud Muffin and Sir PoopsAlot.

Both girls plan to put the proceeds from the sale of their animals into college funds.

The market and auction take place at the fairgrounds, 710 S.W. Rock Creek Drive.

A buffet starts at 2 p.m., and the auction begins at 3 p.m. For more information, contact Dennis or Michelle Mederos at 601-4835.

Free child development screenings available

Children ages birth to 36 months are eligible for a free development screening through the Washington State Department of Early Learning.

Families will receive a summary of their child’s developmental skills.

CHS band sets mattress fundraiser

The Camas High School band is having a mattress sale fundraiser at the school from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17.

All proceeds will be used to help band members travel to perform in Disney World.

All sizes and several types of mattresses are available at 30 to 50 percent off retail prices. Delivery is also available.

CHS is located at 26900 S.E. 15th St.

Washougal School District offers preschool, aftercare

Preschool registration is available for the Washougal School District/Community Education preschools located at Cape Horn-Skye, Gause and Hathaway elementary schools.

Students ages 3 to 5 years old, and fully toilet trailed, can attend.

Curriculum is aligned with the Washington State Early Learning and Development Guidelines.

In addition, before and after school care is available through the Community Education Safe Place Activities CEnter program located at Gause Elementary School.

It is open to all kindergarten through fifth-grade students in the Washougal School District. SPACE is open on school days from 6:30 a.m. until school starts and after school until 6 p.m. Bussing is available for students at Hathaway and Cape Horn-Skye Elementary Schools.

The program provides activities, homework help, breakfast and snacks. Early release Wednesday afternoons have rotating activities including science, dance, art, Legos and cooking.

‘ET’ will be shown at Crown Park Friday

The next film that is part of the Movies in the Park series will be shown Friday at Crown Park in Camas.

The classic, “ET: The Extra Terrestrial” will begin at 8:30 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or low back chairs and a picnic, or purchase treats from Kidz with Ice at the event.

Other movies that will be shown as part of the free series include: “Rango” (PG) Aug. 23, at 8 p.m., and “Madagascar 3,” (PG) Aug. 30 at 7:45 p.m.

Pre-movie activities begin one hour before each show.

Crown Park is located at Northeast 17th Avenue and Everett Street.

Movies in the Park, organized by Camas Parks and Recreation, is presented by Camas United Methodist Church.
