Vancouver resident Deena Pierott, founder and executive director of the iUrban Teen Tech program, has been recognized by the White House as one of 11 “Champions of Change for Tech Inclusion.”
The honor goes to those who help expand opportunities for young learners, especially minorities and women, to develop skills and potential careers in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, industries.
Pierott’s iUrban Teen program, focused on African-American and Latino males but inclusive of other nontraditional STEM learners, exposes participants to career opportunities and encourages high school graduation and extended learning.
“While active for less than three years, the iUrban Teen program has already encouraged over 600 youth in the Pacific Northwest to pursue STEM education and, potentially, professional careers,” according to a news release issued by the White House.
