Vancouver Fire Department Capt. Carl Murray, who served the agency for 21 years, died Tuesday of cancer.
Because a firefighter may be exposed to byproducts of combustion that are assumed to cause cancer, Murray’s death is classified by the state as a line of duty death.
Murray, 51, will be honored at a memorial at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Church of God, 3300 N.E. 78th St., at 11 a.m. The public is invited.
A procession will begin at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 1101 N.E. 112th Ave., at 10 a.m. and travel north on 112th Avenue, west onto 63rd Street, right onto Andresen Road and left onto Padden Parkway and finally to the church. This route allows the procession to go by Station 5, located at the corner of Northeast 63rd and Andresen Road.
Area agencies will backfill the agency’s fire district so that residents will not see a change in service during the memorial, Operations Chief Dan Olson said.
Murray was hired by the department in 1992 and was promoted to captain in 2003. He worked on the Hazmat team for several years.
Murray was voted by the Vancouver Fire Fighters Union, Local 452, as the captain of the year in 2012.
He is survived by his wife, Wendy; his children Hailey Coxon, Olivia Murray, Quinn Murray and Sophie Bloom; stepdaughters Olivia Bloom and Madeleine Bloom; stepson Seth Minor; parents June and James Murray; sister Nicola Atanassova; brother Simon Murray; and grandson Maddox Murray.
In lieu of flowers, Murray’s family asks that those interested make donations to the Vancouver Fire Fighters Union, Local 452 Peer Charity fund.
