OLYMPIA — The agency tasked with creating a regulated marijuana system in Washington state is losing its director.

Gov. Jay Inslee said Wednesday he is naming Pat Kohler to serve as the director of the Washington State Department of Licensing. Kohler had served for more than a decade as the director of the Washington State Liquor Control Board.

The liquor control board is currently developing rules for a legal marijuana industry, such as how the plants will be grown, how marijuana products will be tested for strength and quality, and how many retail stores will be allowed.

Inslee spokeswoman Jaime Smith says Kohler will start the new job at the beginning of June. The liquor control board will work to select a new director.
