Two teams from the Washington Timbers youth soccer club won championships on Sunday in the statewide Virginia Mason Washington State Challenge Cup tournament.
Washington Timbers White won the boys under-13 Division 2 tournament. Washington Timbers Blue won the girls under-13 Division 2 tournament.
The Challenge Cup is the mid-level state tournament for competitive clubs staged by Washington Youth Soccer.
The semifinals and finals for the under-13 tournaments were played on Saturday and Sunday at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.
Timbers White won its final match on Sunday 1-0 over NW Nationals. Quentin Petcu scored in the third minute of the match on a breakaway set up by a pass from Gabe Franklin. Timbers defenders Conner Brower, Adam Carter and Bryan Nguyen helped goalkeeper JD Ellis earn his fourth shutout of the tournament.
In the semifinals on Saturday, Timbers White beat Pacific NW White 7-0. Nick Erickson scored three goals and Petcu had two goals and one assist, Conner Brower and Nelson Lord also scored goals and Evan Alayan had two assists.
The team had 33 wins, seven draws and 12 losses across all competitions in 2012-13, outscoring opponents 170-86.
Playing for Timbers White were: Alayan, Brower, Carter, J.T. Correy, Ellis, Erickson, Franklin, Grant Gray, Preston Harrod, C.J. Henry, Jr., Jett Hite, Lord, Owen Murphy, Nguyen, Petcu, Evan Phengthalangsy and Jamison Wright. The team was coached by Jason Ellis and Brett Baumgarte.
The girls Washington Timbers Blue team defeated a Whatcom FC Rangers team from Bellingham, 1-0, in its final match on Sunday. Angela Gomez scored the goal in the ninth minute, with an assist from Isabelle Davis.
In Saturday’s semifinal, Timbers Blue beat Snohomish United Black 2-0. Sophia Skimas had a goal and an assist, and Katie Boon also scored.
The Timbers Blue girls finished the 2012-13 season with an overall record of 25-17-3. The players were: Emma Jenkins, Davis and Olivia Griffin, Samantha Moya, Phoebe Bunn, Isabelle Bauer, Hannah Mixon, Kay Waller, Emma White, Gomez, Skimas, and Marina Purvis, Boon, Allison McReery and Turner Joy. The coaches were Sean Davis and George Moya. The team manager was Tiffany Bunn.
Washington Timbers FC is the new name for the youth soccer club most recently called Vancouver Timbers. It is one of several youth soccer clubs aligned with the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer.
• Locals contribute for Timbers Reserves — Anthony Machionne of Camas and James Nosack of Ridgefield were among the Timbers Academy players who saw action for the Timbers Reserves in a April 15 match against the San Jose Earthquakes Reserves at Jeld-Wen Field. Niko De Vera of Washougal was on the 18-player roster but did not see action. De Vera scored a goal for the Timbers Academy under-16 team on April 21 in a draw with the De Anza Force from the San Francisco area.
The Timbers Academy teams play home matches on Saturday against the San Jose Earthquakes teams and on Sunday against Cal Odyssey at the Adidas Timbers Training Center in Beaverton.
