Vancouver police are investigating human bones that were found along Interstate 5 south at the exit ramp to East 39th Street on Tuesday night.

Patrol officers were dispatched to the top of the exit ramp around 7 p.m., where they found the bones in thick shrubbery on the freeway side of the ramp, said Kim Kapp, spokesman for the Vancouver Police Department.

The department’s Major Crimes Unit went to the site Wednesday morning, in the daylight, to retrieve the remains.

Several unmarked police vehicles were parked along the ramp Wednesday morning during the investigation.

All of them left the site by noon.

There was no indication about the gender of the deceased or the cause of death.

Investigators will attempt to identify the skeletal remains.
