It’s a good thing the Seattle Mariners scored seven runs Monday in a 7-1 victory over the Houston Astros. After his last outing, Felix Hernandez was probably having a little buyer’s remorse over his $175 million, seven-year deal with the Mariners.
In his last outing, King Felix allowed four hits, no walks, and no earned runs while striking out 12 against Detroit, but came away with no decision. And you could almost hear him thinking, “I signed up for seven more years of this?!?”
Monday, the offense came through with Hernandez on the mound. Not that he needed much support — this time he allowed no runs.

Considering that it took place in Portland, it’s probably not surprising that the Portland Thorns drew 16,479 fans for their home opener Sunday. Portland truly has regained the status it held during the 1970s as Soccer City USA, and the faithful are determined to hold on to that title.
It’s unlikely the Thorns will draw 16,000 to every game. And there’s no telling what the long-term prospects are for the National Women’s Soccer League. But we would bet that for as long as the league is around, Portland will have its most rabid fan base.

Some of the final details for college football’s pending playoff are expected to be hashed out this week when officials meet in Pasadena, Calif. You know, things such as which bowls will be in the rotation for the four-team playoff, and the site for the inaugural title game in January 2015.
And while the big-wigs formulate their plans for taking over the world, allow us to make a suggestion: How about a championship game sometime in Seattle?
CenturyLink field, while not traditionally a college football stadium, would be ideal for a title game, and Seattle would be a wonderful host city.
The Seahawks, at times, have floated talk of trying to bring a Super Bowl to the Northwest, but a college football title game seems more realistic.
