On Wednesday, April 24, author Michael David Gholston will read from his book, “Any Road,” at the Camas Public Library. The event starts at 6:30 p.m., in the library’s upstairs meeting rooms.
Gholston was born in Oklahoma, and moved to Camas in 1969. He graduated from Camas High School in 1973, and although opposed to the Vietnam War, enlisted in the Navy to train as a military journalist and see the world.
Over the succeeding years, Gholston witnessed the evacuations of Saigon and Phnom Penn, took on a variety of civilian jobs, ranging from a laborer in the Portland shipyards to editor of an Oregon community newspaper. He also attended college to study broadcast journalism. Later, as a member of the Oregon National Guard, was deployed to Mosul, Iraq, and then to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He even met comedian Robin Williams along the way.
It was at Guantanamo Bay that Gholston wrote his first book, “Any Road,” published by Tate Publishing. This autobiography, which begins in Camas and ends with his deployment to Cuba, tells the tales of witnessing history first-hand, working in exotic places, and dealing with post traumatic stress disorder.
