Coast Guard pulls ships from Rose Festival

Because of budget cuts, the U.S. Coast Guard pulled its ships and aircraft from participating in demonstrations at this year’s Portland Rose Festival.

The Coast Guard announced Thursday the decision to trim participation in the Rose Festival and Seattle Seafair’s Fleet Week celebrations was a response to the Budget Control Act of 2011, which led to across-the-board federal spending cuts known as sequestration.

The agency will still provide safety enforcement during both events.

Economic woes also led the U.S. Navy to cancel ship visits during Portland’s Fleet Week.
