Talking Points: Seahawks, 49ers dates set

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Believe it or not, Thursday was one of the most anticipated days of the sports year — the NFL schedule was released.

So, circle your calendars for Sept. 15 and Dec. 8. That’s when the Seahawks meet the 49ers in what could be two of the biggest games of the regular season. Both teams were among the best in the league by the end of last year, and both have made offseason moves that likely will make them even better this season.

We would say that the Seahawks and 49ers both will go 15-1 this year, but that would be getting carried away. Still, the schedule is out; let the analysis begin.

Speaking of sports schedules, one of the examples of absurd scheduling is now in the spotlight. The first round of the NBA playoffs begins Saturday, and that first round could last up to 16 days.

C’mon, NBA. Playoff series should play every other day; there should not be any instances of having two days off between games.

But, apparently, the desire to stretch the first round over three weekends outweighs our complaints. And until people stop watching, nothing is going to change.

Um, about that $175 million, seven-year contract Felix Hernandez signed with the Seattle Mariners … do you think he’s having buyer’s remorse?

On Wednesday, King Felix allowed four hits, no walks, and no earned runs over eight innings while striking out 12. He ended up with no decision. Hernandez left with a 1-1 tie in a game the Mariners eventually lost 2-1 in 14 innings.

The hope this year was that Seattle would come up with some semblance of an offense. But it’s beginning to look like it will be another season of frustration for Hernandez.
