The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office will suspend processing new Concealed Handgun License applications from Washington residents received after Wednesday.
The office is trying to reduce its four-month backlog of 2,400 CHL applications, said Lt. Steve Alexander. Washington residents who are current CHL holders can still renew their permits in Multnomah.
According to Washington and Oregon law, a permit in one state doesn’t work in the other. If a Washington resident wants to carry a gun in both states, they need a permit in their home state and a non-resident license from Oregon.
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office delivers approved permits to the applicant’s address within 45 days of application. To continue meeting that time line, the office will only process Multnomah County resident applications.
Once the office reduces the backlog, services will reopen for Washington residents looking to get a CHL permit in Oregon, Alexander said.
