A narrow loss on Saturday sets up an important match on Tuesday for the Evergreen Lacrosse Club.
The team of girls from Evergreen Public Schools hosts Lake Tapps at 6 p.m. today at McKenzie Stadium. The winner will gain the inside track to an automatic berth to the Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association playoffs.
The ELC Black Cats suffered their first Nisqually Conference loss of the season on Saturday, when defending conference champion Puyallup rallied for a 9-7 win at McKenzie Stadium.
Sarah Neve opened the scoring for the Black Cats. and Emily McCoy and Madeline McKinnon each tallied three times. Evergreen goalie Dawn Lumen made a season-high 19 saves to lead the defensive effort.
Also in the next seven days, Evergreen visits Bethel on Thursday night, then on Monday, April 22 will host Curtis. That varsity game will start at 6:30 p.m., following a JV contest at 4:30. The Evergreen JV team, comprised of first-year players, posted a 9-8 victory over Puyallup on Saturday.
King’s Way boys split lacrosse matches
The King’s Way Christian Knights dropped their first game of the boys lacrosse season on Friday as visiting Mercer Island prevailed 12-7.
On Saturday, the Knight beat visiting Emerald Ridge-Puyallup 9-1.
In Friday’s loss, Jack Beall had three goals, four assists and four ground balls for King’s Way. Connor Dyehouse scored twice and Clayton Frank and Evan Ramirez each had a goal.
On Saturday, Greg Klein had four goals and fielded four ground balls to lead King’s Way. Dyehouse had three goals and four ground balls, and Brian Prigmore had a goal, four assists and five ground balls.
The Knights face two strong tests this week, hosting Bainbridge Island on Friday and visiting Bellevue on Saturday.
Camas lacrosse wins twice — In Division II games, Camas posted two wins and a loss last week and Union lost its only game.
The Camas wins came 11-7 over Roosevelt and 13-3 over North Kitsap. Bryce Tabbut had four goals and Austin Garwood had three goals and seven ground balls in the win over Roosevelt. Tabbut and Garwood each scored three goals in Saturday’s win over North Kitsap.
The Skyline JV beat Camas 13-7 last Monday.
On Wednesday, the Issaquah JV defeated the Union lacrosse team 16-5. No details from that match were available.
On Friday, the Union club takes on Richland at Hanford High School. Camas (3-2-0) is idle until it faces Union at 5 p.m. on April 24 at Pacific Middle School.
Rugby teams post wins
Clark County’s three boys high school rugby teams posted wins on Saturday.
In the varsity division of Rugby Oregon, the Battle Ground Bulls rode a strong second half to a 39-27 win at Oregon City. Battle Ground trailed 22-5 at halftime.
Trevor Ingram scored three tries and John Cormican and Daniel Monen supplied two tries apiece. Monen also kicked two conversions.
Battle Ground hosts Lincoln at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Laurin Middle School.
Also on Saturday, the Prairie Wolf Pack won 26-0 at Newberg. Hayden Perrins scored two tries, Anthony Bomparde intercepted a pass and ran 50 meters to score in the first half, and Dallas Goodpaster scored a try to highlight the Prairie win.
Prairie visits defending champion Reynolds at noon on Saturday.
In the Club Division for teams with players from multiple schools, the Clark County Warriors beat the Vandals of Portland 57-24 on Saturday. The Warriors’ scoring came from Jason Vailea, Nick Gadbaw, Justin Straup, Brock Busch, Jessie Kiesser, Darrin Curle, Jaren Rhea, Jessie Saulo, Riley Moss, and Matt Wallser.
Clark County plays unbeaten Beaverton at noon on Saturday at Delta Park.
Clark County Vipers lose football opener
The Gig Harbor Bearcats used two second-half touchdowns to beat the Clark County Vipers 22-7 on Saturday in a Pacific Football League game at Kiggins Bowl.
Playing their first game of the amateur football season, the Vipers opened the scoring with a first-quarter touchdown pass to Garrick Ashenfelter from Will Kilday. Matt Tefs converted the extra point.
Gig Harbor scored late in the first half to tie the score, then added a pair of second half touchdown. The Bearcats have a league-best 2-0 record.
The Vipers travel to Bellingham this Saturday to play the Bulldogs. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. at Lummi High School. The next home game for Clark County is on May 11 at Kiggins Bowl against Southern Oregon.
Vancouver man 3rd at Napa Valley triathlon
Josh Monda of Vancouver placed third on Saturday in a triathlon in Napa Valley, Calif.
Competing in the half-triathlon distance, Monda finished with a time of 4 hours 28 minutes, 36.28 seconds. The course started with a 1.2-mile swim followed by a 56-mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run.
Monda, 31, said his half-marathon time of 1:20:46 was his personal best for a 13.1-mile run during a triathlon. His run time was the best in the field of 244 finishers.
Monda said he knew by the midpoint of the run that he was unlikely to catch either of the two runners in front of him, so he concentrated on setting a PR. He finished a little more than three minutes behind winner David Condon of California and 46 seconds behind the runner up.
“I am very pleased with this result so early in the season,” Monda said, noting that temperatures reached 75 degrees during the run.
It was the third multi-sport race Monda completed over three consecutive weekends. On March 30 he won the Spring Classic duathon race along Marine Drive in Northeast Portland. On April 6 he placed fourth in the Beaver Freezer Sprint Triathlon in Corvallis, Ore.
Washougal woman golfs for OGA team
Debbie Friede of Washougal is among the 12 golfers who will play for the Oregon Golf Association at the eighth PNGA Cup tournament, which will be played May 1-3 in Boise, Idaho.
Friede won the 2012 Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur tournament, and is one of two women in the senior division on the OGA team.
The PNGA Cup is a Ryder Cup-style competition among state associations within the Pacific Northwest Golf Association.
The PNGA Cup consists of foursome matches, four-ball matches and singles matches. Each association will compete in 24 matches.
