A black bear cub was spotted in Camas this afternoon, but seemed to venture back into the nearby forested area without any trouble.

The Camas Police Department received a call just before 3 p.m. from a resident who eyed a cub hanging out in a tree just south of Round Lake by the 311-acre Lacamas Park. Soon after, another caller said they saw a small bear running along Northeast Everett Street in the same area.

An animal control officer responded, but couldn’t find a bear, said Camas Police Department Sgt. Scot Boyles.

He said bears are known to visit the city a few times a year.

“It’s not uncommon to see bears in the woods in that area,” Boyles said.

Last fall there were a handful of bear sightings in Camas, also near Round Lake. That led the Camas School District to suspend activities in October at the lake, including cross-country practices.
