Talking Points: More ‘Link magic?

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Is there magic at CenturyLink Field? On Monday, the Seahawks picked up a disputed-but-memorable last-play victory over the Packers. On Thursday, the Huskies used a fierce defense to upend eighth-ranked Stanford on the same field. Now, Washington State is borrowing the Seahawks’ stadium for a “home” game against second-ranked Oregon.

Can lightning strike a third time?

Considering that Oregon has adroitly avoided the upset bug during Chip Kelly’s tenure, and that the Ducks are 301/2-point favorites, a Cougar victory would seem unlikely. Add in the fact that WSU’s “home” game likely will feature more Duck fans than Cougar fans, and the outlook becomes even more gloomy for the Crimson and Gray.

On the other hand, CenturyLink has seen plenty of wizardry already this week. Who’s to say there won’t be another surprise?

Speaking of the Huskies’ victory Thursday, Washington held the Cardinal to 65 yards on the ground. That happens to be the same number as the amount of POINTS they gave up to Stanford the previous year. So, do any Husky fans miss ousted defensive coordinator Nick Holt? Anybody? We didn’t think so.

We don’t necessarily have a solution, but we wish there were a way for golf’s powers that be to move the Ryder Cup to earlier in the year. The Ryder Cup is one of the premier events in all of sports, bringing together most of the world’s best golfers in the name of national (or continental) pride. But in this country, it tends to get lost in the chaos of a football weekend. The Ryder Cup deserves better.
