Woman pleads guilty to Craigslist prostitution robbery

A woman accused of plotting to rob a Hazel Dell man who answered her prostitution ad was sentenced Friday to three years and nine months in prison.
Danielle L. Azevedo, 24, of Salmon Creek pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted robbery and possession of methamphetamine. She advertised herself as a prostitute on the Craigslist website and arranged to meet the victim the night of Aug. 14 at his home.
When she arrived at the home of Greg Kappler, the two went into the bedroom. Azevedo then said she had to retrieve something in her car and left the room. That’s when her boyfriend entered, allegedly clubbing Kappler repeatedly, prosecutors said.
Kappler was hospitalized with serious injuries, including a concussion.
“He was very lucky to have not suffered life-threatening injuries,” said Deputy Prosecutor Anna Klein.
Azevedo told sheriff’s investigators that she and her boyfriend had planned the robbery together.
Azevedo’s boyfriend, Jacob Diepenbrock, was initially charged with first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and possession of methamphetamine. Prosecutors on Sept. 13 dismissed charges against Diepenbrock without prejudice, meaning the charges could be refiled.
Klein said the case against Diepenbrock case requires further investigation. The victim could not identity Diepenbrock as the assailant; according to court documents he was identified by only Azevedo. Klein declined to elaborate further, citing the active investigation.
As Kappler was being clubbed with a metal pipe, he managed to retrieve a handgun. Azevedo yelled “gun,” and she and the assailant fled, Klein said.
When investigators later contacted Azevedo and when they searched her, they found meth in her wallet, the deputy prosecutor said.
Klein and defense attorney Lou Byrd agreed to recommend a 45-month sentence. Clark County Superior Court Judge Diane Woolard went with the attorneys’ recommendation.
“Sounds like you were in engaging in some reckless behavior,” Woolard said as she handed down the sentence.
Azevedo received credit for the 44 days she’s spent in the Clark County Jail.
In February, Azevedo was sentenced to three months in jail for a burglary attempt in the Tigard, Ore., area. Azevedo, a former “short-term girlfriend” of that victim, had copied a key to the apartment and given it to her male co-defendant, a man named Cody Connel. Azevedo, who pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree burglary and first-degree theft, also was given two years’ probation.
