West Hazel Dell — Irrigation and communication have come to the community garden at Hazel Dell Elementary School, thanks to two Eagle Scouts. Glenn Whearty of Troop 14 installed irrigation to the 15 beds in the upper garden; Jarron Simon of Troop 343 built a kiosk/message center. “Both Eagle projects will make an important difference in the garden,” said garden coordinator Barbara Nordstrom. “Being able to control the amount and time of watering will conserve water, and the message center will be invaluable in communicating with the 25 families who have raised growing beds and the children of Hazel Dell School and the Boys and Girls Club who enjoy the garden.” The garden also includes five communal beds for shared harvest and donations to the Homestead Homeless Shelter.
