The sprint distance race during Sunday’s Portland Triathlon was a Vancouver showcase.

Led by Josh Monda’s winning time of 1 hour, 17 minutes and 24 seconds, three of the first four to complete the North Portland race were from Vancouver.

Jaysun Pyatt of Vancouver finished behind Monda in 1:18:58, and Trevor Hayward of Vancouver was fourth in 1:21:28. A total of 374 finished the Portland sprint distance race. There was also a longer Olympic distance triathlon that had 306 finishers led by Roger Thompson of Spokane in 1:59:07.

The races started and finished at Cathedral Park in north Portland. The sprint course began with a 750-meter swim in the Willamette River. Next came a 16.16-mile bike ride. The race finished with a 3.1-mile run that included the St. Johns Bridge.

“The sprint (triathlon) can be so much fun because you don’t have to pace yourself,” Monda said. It is also a competitive distance with little margin for error, he said.

Sunday’s race was the first significant race for the 30-year-old Monda since he dropped out at mile 22 of the Vancouver USA Marathon in June with several muscle injuries. He said he didn’t run for several months while he rehabilitated those injuries.

His first race back from the injuries was the Muscle Max Triathlon on Sept. 9 at Salmon Creek Park. That race was four miles shorter than the Portland Triathlon on the bike portion, and Monda won that in 1:07:51. Dave Soelberg, 43, finished in 1:10:32 and was the second of six Clark County finishers who led 60 across the Max Muscle Triathlon sprint distance finish line.Monda said he treated the smaller Max Muscle race as a test run for the Portland event. His next major challenge, Monda said, will be the Ironman Arizona in November of 2013.
