Skyview routs Lakes, 35-14

Skyview coach Steve Kizer will remember this game against Lakes more fondly than his first against the Lancers from Lakewood.

“This game went better than my last game against Lakes,” Kizer said. “It was 94 games ago. My first game with Skyview was against Lakes, and we lost by 60. And if (Lakes coach Dave Miller and Kizer) weren’t such good friends, it would have been by 100.”

You will forgive the veteran coach for his memory. The margin of victory in the game in 2004 was actually 27 points.

But, yes, this one went better for Kizer and the Storm.

Skyview scored 21 points in the third quarter to pull away from the Lancers for a 35-14 non-league win Friday at Kiggins Bowl.

The final score masked how competitive the game was in the first half. In fact, Lakes found itself one yard away from going into the intermission tied at 14.

With the ball on the Skyview 1-yard line in the final minute of the first half, Lakes mishandled a handoff, resulting in a fumble that Skyview recovered in the end zone.

In the second half, the Storm took command.

“We just came out with more energy in the second half,” Skyview’s Jabari Marshall said. “We just wanted to play the game like it was 0-0. We knew they were going to get tired because they had a lot of guys playing both ways. We just need to keep up with our pace.”

Kizer said: “Once we got that momentum, we did a good job of keeping our foot on the pedal.”

Jordan Berni got the Storm rolling in the third quarter when he took the first snap from scrimmage and ran 46 yards. It was the first play of an 11-play, 83-yard drive that ended with Marshall’s second touchdown run of the game and ninth of the season to put Skyview up 21-7.

After stopping Lakes on downs on the Lancers’ next drive, Skyview needed just three plays to score, with Jacob Dennis taking a slant pass and racing 64 yards for a touchdown and a 28-7 lead.

After a three-and-out for Lakes, Skyview had a four-and-score, with Dennis pulling in a 34-yard pass from Berni for a touchdown near the end of the third quarter.

Berni passed for 208 yards and two TDs, and he rushed for 78 and another score. Dennis had four catches for 106 yards for the Storm, who have left their Week 1 loss behind them with league set to start in two weeks.

“I like where we are right now,” Kizer said. “We’re a little beat up right. I’d like us to get a healthy. But other than that, I feel good.”

Certainly much better than he felt in 2004.
