Last winter, there was a car accident at Ellsworth and Evergreen Boulevard. The metal fence bordering the sidewalk east of Ellsworth was damaged and has had yellow tape on it ever since. Is the city going to repair it? Did the driver have insurance that would pay for it? It was installed when the walking path from Ellsworth to the Columbia Springs fish hatchery was put in, so it must be the city’s. The fence/railing is the same design all the way down to the hatchery even though this section is on the opposite side.

According to Loretta Callahan of Vancouver Public Works, there are no leads on who smashed the fence. So yes, the city will make repairs — and if no culprit is found, taxpayers will bear the brunt.
“We are aware of the damage caused by the accident and have worked with Vancouver Police Department,” said Callahan. If you, reader, have any information related to that accident, Callahan asks that you call 911 and let them know you want to provide information on this case.
“In the meantime, Public Works staff have begun the process of having the damaged portion replaced,” she wrote in an email. “That includes trying to match the original design and materials, then having the portion of fence and any related structural elements fabricated and installed. Providing all goes according to plan, the fence repairs are expected to be completed by later this fall. The cost is not known at this time.
