Image — Work has begun on long-planned improvements to Northeast 137th/138th Avenue, from 28th Street to 49th Street. The project is designed to improve traffic flow and safety for cars, pedestrians and cyclists.

There will be a widened travel lane in each direction, with a continuous concrete median and bicycle lanes; sidewalks, retaining walls, sound walls, storm water drainage improvements, sanitary sewer, street lighting, striping and landscaping; and traffic roundabouts at 32nd, 39th and 44th streets. Total cost: about $14.6 million.

Nutter Corp. is the city’s contractor. Construction hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with additional hours Saturdays as needed. Construction is expected to continue through winter 2013.
