Crews were still working Wednesday to get a handle on a wildfire that has burned nearly 2,000 acres of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest near Mount Adams.

The Cascade Creek fire on Wednesday morning had not been contained; there are 390 personnel assigned to battle the blaze. It sparked Saturday morning.

The fire was moving toward the Pacific Crest Trail, according to reports.

“Containment is the gauge of confidence fire managers have the fire will stay within existing control lines, not simply the amount of the fire that has control line on it,” spokesman Dale Warriner said in an update. “Weather, fuels, topography and available resources are all taken into consideration when making that determination.”

On Tuesday, the fire pushed farther north. Crews were trying to prevent the fire from moving east toward the Yakama Nation Reservation, and state and private lands, Warriner said.

The fire on Monday night destroyed the historic Peterson Prairie Guard Station, northwest of Trout Lake.

Warriner said he expects it will be a few days before they “turn the corner” with the firefighting effort.
