A woman was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when she was shot in the leg at 1201 N.E. 117th St.

When police arrived around 1:15 p.m., the 54-year-old woman had one gunshot wound in her left leg, and the 71-year-old shooter was still on scene, police said.

According to emergency radio traffic monitored by The Columbian, the woman was shot by her landlord. Fire District 6 Battalion Chief Larry Reese said the two had disagreed.

“It appears she may have assaulted him and he was running away from her. She was trying to barge into his house when he shot her in the leg,” Reese said.

The woman ran next door to a neighbor’s home, and the neighbor called 911, according to Sgt. Chad Rothenberger with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Jon Shields administered a tourniquet to stem the flow of blood before firefighters arrived. The woman was later transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.

“The bullet nicked her femoral artery, so if the deputy hadn’t put a tourniquet on her leg, she could have bled to death,” Reese said.

The shooting was reported as an accident and the shooter cooperated with the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit, which is investigating this incident.

Names were not released.
