(Above) Camas-Washougal Fire Department Capt. Larry Saari participates in a moment of silence to remember the New York City firefighters who died as a result of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. During this morning’s ceremony, held in front of the Camas Public Library, Saari rang a silver bell — a tradition in fire services that honors those who died in the line of duty.

(Left) People all ages turned out for the Sept. 11 commemoration event in Camas. Another local event, organized by East County Fire & Rescue, will be held tonight at 8 p.m., when there will be the lighting of a display and a reading of the names of the 343 New York City firefighters who died in the attacks. The ceremony at Station 91, 600 N.E. 267th Ave., in Camas, will follow a spaghetti dinner from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to help local charities.
