Flames that could be seen for miles Wednesday evening signified the beginning of the 2012 fall high school sports season in Washougal.
At 8:30 p.m., members of the Camas-Washougal Fire Department ignited a large pile of kindling at the former Hambleton Brothers Lumber Mill property, at Second and “A” streets. Washougal High School athletes, coaches, cheerleaders, students, staff members and parents gathered around the fire to showcase their Panther pride.
“This is all about coming together and recognizing the amazing community we have here,” said WHS Principal Aaron Hansen.
More than 100 people watched the blaze for over an hour. They hugged, laughed, told stories and took pictures.
“This is how Washougal does a bonfire,” said Mayor Sean Guard.
