Birthday golf wish comes true for Myers

When he blew out the birthday candles this summer, Kel Myers wished for a hole-in-one.

Probably not the most original wish for a golfer who has worked on his game for eight years.

But it certainly was magical.

On Aug. 31, barely one month after his 11th birthday, Kel aced the par-3 15th hole at Tri-Mountain Golf Course.

Kel used a 4-hybrid club for the 130-yard tee shot into a cross breeze. His swing felt good and the flight of the ball was encouraging. He figured it might be close as it bounced out of sight.

It wasn’t until several people who had a view of the green delivered the news that Kel knew his birthday wish had come true.

“I jumped up and down a couple of times,” he said. “It’s pretty neat.”

A sixth-grader at McLoughlin Middle School, Kel said he played golf about three times a week during the summer. He had come close to a hole-in-one three times prior to the ace.

His dad, Kevin, said he had a feeling Kel would get a hole-in-one sooner or later. Kevin Myers said that three times during August he told his son that his drive looked like a possible ace.

“He has hit it to (within) less than a foot three times,” Kevin said.

Kevin Myers said he has come within inches of a hole-in-one a number of times, but is still seeking his first ace.

Kel can check that off his wish list.

So what about his 12th birthday?

“I’ll wish for a jet pack,” Kel said.
