Try this: Woodcarvers take walk on the wildlife side

Artists from around the country will display their workmanship at the 25th annual Columbia Flyway Wildlife Show. The juried woodcarving competition and display focuses on the art of carving realistic wildlife sculptures and bird decoys. The public is invited to meet carvers — who will be showcasing their work and competing for best in show — from all over the United States and Canada. Anthony Donato will be the featured artist. Children activities include learning about different types of birds and painting a wooden bird or feather from 1 to 3 p.m. today. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The flyway wildlife show is one of many options for getting out and about this weekend. Others include a night of re-enactments and a country concert.

Stuffed with entertainment

The annual Vancouver Sausage Fest returns with a community celebration featuring entertainment, a beer garden, and carnival rides. Local dancers, musicians and performers will take the stage. Highlights for today include the band There She Goes, Molly Malone Irish Dancers, Dance Fusion and Radical Revolution. On Sunday, the entertainment includes the Evergreen Dance Academy, Hula Hoop contest, Stardust Quartet and the performances by the finalists in the Southwest Washington’s Got Talent competition.

Time travel by candlelight

The Campfires and Candlelight tour will lead visitors back in time as Fort Vancouver puts on one of its largest costumed re-enactments of the year. The stroll through local history begins at Pearson Air Museum and make its way along the Spruce Mill Trail through military camps from multiple eras. The journey ends with the residents at Fort Vancouver’s Village. The event will include music, hands-on activities, plowing and weapons demonstrations.

When: 4 to 10 p.m. tonight.

Guitars honoring heroes

The stars come out for a last summer concert hurrah at Stars & Guitars, sponsored by the country radio station KUPL 98.7 FM. The concert will be held in honor of military members, first responders and veterans, featuring performances by local singer Kurt Van Meter, country duo Cloverdayle, Nashville’s Lonestar, singer-songwriter Andy Gibson, rising country star Dustin Lynch, the Mavericks and singer Craig Morgan. Lawn chairs or blankets are recommended.

‘The Words’ weaves a wild tale

Hopeful novelist Rory Jensen (Bradley Cooper) is trying to write the next great American novel. When he finds an old manuscript in a suitcase while on his honeymoon with Dora (Zoë Saldana), Rory passes it off as his own work, to great success and praise.
