Concordia University junior forward Adam Herman was named to the preseason All-Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s basketball team by CCC coaches.
The Prairie High School graduate averaged 19.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists a game last season for the Cavaliers, shooting 68.9 percent (176 of 256) from the field.
Concordia was 14-16 in 2011-12, reaching the conference tournament quarterfinals. The Cavaliers were picked eighth in the 10-team CCC preseason poll of conference coaches.
Herman had 22 points and 12 rebounds in the team’s 102-75 exhibition loss to NCAA Division I University of Oregon on Monday in Eugene.
The 6-foot-6 Herman, one of the NAIA’s leaders in field goal percentage the past two seasons, connected on 8 of 18 shots against the Ducks of the Pacific-12 Conference.
He had 14 points and nine rebounds in an 87-69 exhibition loss to the University of Portland.
The Cavaliers also play Portland State and Eastern Washington in an ambitious exhibition schedule before opening the regular season at home Nov. 7 against Multnomah University.
EWU’s Black Second Team All-Big Sky
Eastern Washington University sophomore forward Cassie Black was named to the All-Big Sky Conference Second Team for women’s soccer.
The Battle Ground High School graduate led the Eagles with eight goals and two assists for a total of 18 points. She started 16 of 17 matches, contributing 1,159 total minutes.
She tallied 43 shots — more than doubling her tally from the previous year. Black put 28 of those shots on goal for a .651 on goal percentage. Black tied for second in the Big Sky in goals and took third place in overall points. She was fifth in shots and second in game-winning goals with four on the year.
Black also ranked nationally in four categories, appearing among the top 150 Division I players in total goals (112th), goals a game (112th), points a game (148th) and game-winning goals (35th).
Black’s four game-winning goals broke the single-season school record. Brittany Sparks held the previous record, with three in 2009. Black holds the EWU record for career game-winners with six in two seasons, surpassing the previous record of five set by Cyeeta Mott between 2004-2007.
She also tied the school record for most goals in a game with a hat trick Oct. 5 against North Dakota.
Black was named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week three times, making her the only player in the league to receive the accolade more than once this season.
EWU coach George Hageage told goeags.com that the coaches were “elated” that Black was among those recognized by conference coaches.
“Cassie had a great year,” he told the website. “She was in the top three in almost all stat categories, so for her to be recognized is great.”
Gonzaga’s Thomas 19th at WCC meet
Gonzaga University junior Emily Thomas placed 19th at the West Coast Conference cross country championships held Saturday at Fernhill Park in northeast Portland.
The Camas High School graduate ran the 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) course in 21 minutes, 16 seconds. She helped the Bulldogs finish fourth in the team race, the program’s highest conference meet finish since placing third in 2004.
The University of San Francisco won a fourth consecutive WCC crown, placing all five of its scoring runners in the top 10.
“We’re good. If the right things happened on the right day we could have been second or third,” assistant coach Patty Ley told gozags.com. “We went for it. We’re going to keep going after it. The reality is we went for it and they ran well today.”
Gonzaga will compete in the NCAA West Regional Nov. 9 at Jefferson Park in Seattle.
EOU hitter Sorensen garners CCC honor
Eastern Oregon University sophomore outside hitter Stefani Sorensen was named Cascade Collegiate Conference Volleyball Hitter of the Week, the CCC announced Wednesday.
A 6-foot Camas High School graduate, Sorensen recorded 40 kills with a .372 attack percentage and an average of 3.3 kills a game in victories over Walla Walla, Concordia and Warner Pacific.
The Mountaineers (20-6, 12-4 CCC) conclude the regular season this weekend before the conference tournament Nov. 6-10.
Ridgefield’s Newman earns honors again
Illinois College sophomore kicker Matt Newman was named Midwest Conference Special Teams Performer of the Week following the Blueboys’ 34-31 victory at Monmouth College on Saturday.
The Ridgefield High School graduate garnered conference honors for the second consecutive week and third time this season.
Newman made field goals of 27 and 35 yards in the team’s first defeat of Monmouth since 1996, while stretching his string of consecutive extra points made to 45.
Newman is 5 of 7 on field goal attempts this season, leading Illinois College (7-1, 6-1 MWC) with 60 points scored.
