Try This: One day, many apples

Visitors to the Venersborg Schoolhouse will find more than 200 different varieties of apples for tasting. The sixth-annual Apple Tasting event includes rare heirloom breeds that trace their history back to the Middle Ages. Tasters can enjoy cidermaking and apple-pie demonstrations, with experts on hand to identify homegrown apples. Visitors are encouraged to bring in five or six apples that they want identified, unpolished with the stems attached.

When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The apple tasting event is one of many options for getting out and about this weekend. Others include a ghost tour and harvest festival.

Presidential theater

Washougal High School presents “44 Plays for 44 Presidents,” a fast-paced look at how 44 presidencies have shaped the United States, with each play ranging in time from mere seconds to five minutes. The production is part of a national festival to present 44 productions of the play throughout the country. And the audience will vote for which version of the 45th play — Obama or Romney — they’d like to see.

Airplanes and jack-o-lanterns

The second-annual Aviation Harvest Festival fills Pearson Air Museum with candy and Halloween activities. Visitors can tour the historic airplanes to find the candy stations, build gliders and test them in the hoops challenge, construct Noisy Rocket balloons, take a picture in the pumpkin patch, go fishing for prizes and join the costume parade with awards given out.

Admission: $7; $5 for seniors, active military members and students 6 to 17; free for ages 5 and younger; $22 for families, which includes two adults and as many as four children.

A ghostly tour of history

The Vancouver Heritage Ambassadors host the 10th-annual Old Vancouver Cemetery Tour. Guests are led by guide and lantern through a historical presentation as historic people from Clark County’s past tell their stories next to their grave stones. The tours begin approximately every 15 minutes from the southeast corner gate into the cemetery. Dress for the weather. International Air and Hospitality Academy is offering complimentary parking.

Find connections in ‘Cloud Atlas’

This film explores six interconnected stories that span 500 years, from a 19th century ship voyage, a sci-fi infused 22nd century Korea to warring tribes in the 24th century. The characters are shaped by the actions and consequences of each other through the past, present and future. “Cloud Atlas” is rated R.
