A resident reported seeing a black bear on the 1900 block of 42nd Court in Washougal late Wednesday.

The bear sighting was reported around 8:12 p.m., according to emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian.

Washougal police Cmdr. Allen Cook on Thursday said animal control responded but was unable to find the bear in the area.

A bear sighting in Washougal city limits isn’t an everyday occurrence, Cook said.

“We hardly ever get bear reports in the city,” he said. “It seems to be a very unusual call.”

The Camas-Washougal area has recently seen an uptick in bear sightings. Reports started in September of bears near Round Lake. Earlier this month, people reported seeing bears at two separate locations at the same time, leading Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife to suspect there could be more than one bear in the area.
