Battle Ground — School Board members on Oct. 8 honored four school district employees, a BGHS student and Mayor Lisa Walters for their role in the recent naming of Battle Ground as one of the “100 Best Communities for Young People.” The America’s Promise organization last month selected Battle Ground among the 2012 winners based on efforts by local agencies, organizations and individuals to promote healthful, safe and civic-minded lifestyles among young people and encourage students to stay in school through graduation. In addition to involvement in some of the community’s ongoing programs for youths, the four school district employees — Lydia Sanders, Jennifer Kerr, Cindi Schroeder and Jan Paullin — were instrumental in preparing the lengthy contest application. BGHS student Kyle Harris was honored for helping lead a local suicide-prevention effort and writing an essay on the subject as part of the contest application. Hers essay was selected as the best in the competition.
