Mop-up of a large wildfire burning near Mount Adams has been turned over to local crews, U.S. Forest Service officials announced this week.
The Cascade Creek Fire has consumed 20,500 acres on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest since it sparked last month, but has grown little recently.
A large section of the Adams wilderness remains closed due to the fire, caused by lightning on Sept. 8. Rain is expected to help firefighting across the region this weekend, though state and local burn bans stay in effect for now.
