Camas-Washougal Rotary Club recognizes new teachers

The Camas-Washougal Rotary Club hosted teachers, principals and administrators from the Camas and Washougal school districts at their annual New Teacher Breakfast on Thursday.

The event recognizes local teachers for their commitment to educating children in the community and, “for contributing to the academic excellence for which our schools are known,” according to a press release from the club.

This year, there were 50 new teachers and staff, some hired to replace retirees and others hired to meet to the needs of the growing districts.

“This is something we have done for years to welcome new teachers into the community and make them feel a part of it,” said Jocelyn Lindsay, club president. “We always look forward to any opportunity to show our appreciation for the hard work they do.”

As each school’s principal stood to introduce their staff, they talked about the importance of community support and ways in which their schools and community groups are working together.

“Not only do I feel supported by my superintendent and fellow administrators, but I also feel supported by community groups like Rotary,” said Rex Larson, Gause Elementary School principal. “It’s nice to know that we’re not alone in our efforts to raise and educate these children.”

Washougal School Superintendent Dawn Tarzian agreed.

“To know that this local community not only understands how hard teachers are working but also makes the time to say thank you like this, it means so much to the teachers,” she said.
