Community notebook: Clark County middle school runners in top 15 at Pre-Nationals

Five girls from Clark County were among the top 15 finishers in the middle school race during the Nike Pre-Nationals cross country event at Portland Meadows Race Track.

Sam Rosenkranz took fourth place in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 11 minutes, 33.6 seconds, and Meghan Finley was fifth in 11:37.2. Rosenkranz and Finley attend Shahala Middle School.

Serena Smith, also a Shahala student, finished eighth in 11:49,Emma Jenkins, who placed 11th in 11:53, attends Liberty Middle School. Carlee Reed, another Shahala runner, took 13th in 11:57.

Area dragsters win

Clark County drivers had a big weekend at Woodburn Dragstrip in Woodburn, Ore.

On Saturday, Clark County drivers came out on top in four classifications during the Nostalgia Hot Rod Series races. Richard Dietrich of Battle Ground won the Top Gas Division in a 1941 Chevrolet. Bob Comeau won the Hot Rod II class in his 1939 Chevy. Gordon Cady, Jr., won the Street Machine II class in a 1965 El Camino, edging Jimmy Heriford of Vancouver. Gregg Heriford of Vancouver won the Run Tuff class in a 1972 Vega GT.

On Sunday, Matt Claussen of Vancouver won the Run Tuff class during the National Dragster challenge.Devon Hilton of Vancouver took second in the Super Pro classification and was a King of the Track semifinalist. Robert Glafka of Battle Ground reached the semifinals of the Sportsman class.

Vancouver boats win on Willamette

Four teams from Vancouver Lake Crew won races on the Willamette River over the weekend.

On Saturday, Katherine Borchers and Katie Hickey won the junior girls double scull race during the Head of the Dog Regatta.

On Sunday, Hickey and Corinna Nierbur teamed to win the same event during the Row for the Cure.

Eights from VLC also won the novice girls and novice boys races on Sunday. The junior novice girls eight included Veronica Nicacio, Ellie Varberg, Savanna Gorham, Bonnie Davidson, Zoe Hill, Gabi White, Gabrielle McClure Danielle Alder, and coxswain Rylie Campbell. The junior novice boys eight were Gabe Epstein, Seth Stiglich, Jacob Schmidt, Michael Hewitt, Zach Greenen, Willis Morris, Phillip Renton, Drake Stutesman and coxswain Genna Smith.See the Community Sports Scoreboard for the other VLC rowers at the weekend event.

MMA event Saturday

JRT Boxing and MMA will stage its first amateur mixed martial arts event on Saturday at its gym in Vancouver.

In addition to fighters from Clark County, gyms from Yakima, Medford and Eugene are scheduled to be represented according to promoter Jack Thompson. Thompson is holding the show at his facility at next to the Albertsons store at 5000 E. Fourth Plain Blvd. The schedule, expected to include 10 bouts, has not been finalized.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the first bout will start at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $20 and may be purchased at JRT Boxing and MMA or through TicketsWest outlets.

The event will also be shown on public access television.
