A pair of pedestrian tunnels under state Highway 14 at Cape Horn earned project leaders a national award from the American Public Works Association.

The project received National Project of the Year honors in the category of structures costing less than $5 million. The public works association recognized the Washington State Department of Transportation (the project’s managing agency), Rotschy Inc. (lead contractor) and Wallis Engineering (primary consultant) at an Anaheim, Calif., event this summer.

In addition to the two tunnels, last year’s project straightened curves on state Highway 14, and added turn lanes at the Salmon Falls Road and Cape Horn Road intersections. The effort aimed to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians near the popular Cape Horn Trail in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

Workers finished the $4.6 million project in January, according to WSDOT.
