Try This: Nativity feted

The 12th annual Festival of Nativities will feature more than 400 Nativity sets from around the world, as local high school choirs, musicians and entertainers perform each evening. The festival also features a performance of the Nativity at 6 and 8 tonight. There will be two rooms dedicated to children’s activities, including craft projects, storytime, woodcarving and a chance to dress up in costumes.

When: Noon to 9 p.m. today and Sunday.

Where: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 10509 S.E. Fifth St., Vancouver.

Admission: Free.

The festival is one of many options for getting out and about this weekend.

2. Hometown Celebration

Ridgefield celebrates the holiday season and the history of the community with activities throughout downtown. The Hometown Celebration will include 5K and 10K fun runs, an arts and crafts bazaar, displays, performances by musicians in the Ridgefield Community Library, holiday treats, horse-drawn carriage rides, pictures with Santa and the community tree lighting.

When: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today.

Where: North Main Avenue and Pioneer Street, downtown Ridgefield.

Admission: Free, $15-$20 for 5K, $20-$25 for 10K, food donations encouraged.

3. A ballet splendor

Northwest Classical Ballet presents “The Nutcracker,” as the company’s dancers transport audiences from Christmas Eve festivities to the Land of Sweets as Clara’s nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince, saving Clara from the Mouse King. The production includes original choreography by artistic director Maricar Drilon.

When: 7:30 tonight and 2 p.m. Sunday.

4.Christmas tales remixed

Closing its 10th anniversary season, Magenta Theater Company presents “Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and Then Some!),” its 35th main stage production. The story follows three actors who, instead of performing Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, decide to perform every Christmas story ever told. They also throw in a few Christmas traditions from around the world, seasonal icons from ancient times to present pop culture and every carol in this holiday season romp.

When: 7:30 tonight.

5. ‘Killing Them Softly’

Three small-time thugs (Johnny Sack, Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn) want to make some easy money by robbing a back room poker game, which sets off a violent chain reaction in the criminal economy. Enter Jackie (Brad Pitt), the enforcer hired to track the three down and restore order. “Killing Them Softly” is rated R.
