Battle Ground — The Greater Federation of Women’s Clubs in Battle Ground donated $1,000 toward the city’s Veterans Memorial project. Club President Valerie Huey presented the donation to the Battle Ground City Council on Nov. 5. Efforts began in 2008 to create a memorial in Battle Ground that would honor local veterans who have died in service. The Veterans Memorial is planned for Kiwanis Park. A conceptual illustration shows a memorial wall, five benches representing branches of the U.S. military and flowering cherry trees. Because of budget limitations, the city is looking to fund the project entirely through donations. Battle Ground Parks and Recreation Department Director Debbi Hanson told The Columbian in August it would take an estimated $150,000 to $200,000 to create the memorial. The city is working with the Parks Foundation of Clark County in its fundraising efforts. Learn more at www.cityofbg.org/veteransmemorial.
