Seeing feuding Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer at the front of the field in the closing laps of the NASCAR season finale on Sunday made everyone wonder what would happen.
It turned out to be much ado about nothing. Gordon won the race, finishing a few car lengths ahead of Bowyer.
“After it was over, I thought, ‘Wow, I can’t believe we just finished first and second after what happened last week,’ ” Gordon said.
So all that angst — as well as any potential payback — will linger into next season.
“I just really wanted to catch (Gordon),” Bowyer said. “I wouldn’t have took us both out.”

The Southeastern Conference can breath a little easier now that three teams are within striking distance of the BCS Championship game.
Thanks to Baylor’s win over Kansas State and Stanford’s win over Oregon, the SEC is positioned to make the big game yet again.
It’s good to know that Alabama, Georgia and Florida will be well rested for the postseason after a weekend that saw them win by a combine score of 117-14 over three FCS teams.

A great tennis season was capped off Sunday with a Davis Cup victory for the Czech Republic — the first for that country since 1980, when it was Czechoslovakia.
But really what made 2012 special for tennis was moments like Andy Murray losing the Wimbledon final and then capturing Olympic gold at the same venue, as well as Serena Williams losing early at the French Open only to go 31-1 the rest of the season, winning two Slams and a gold medal.
