Talking Points: State champs for Clark County

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

For Clark County high schools, this already has been a fall sports season worth celebrating. Congratulations to the Columbia River girls soccer team, which won a state title on Saturday, and to the Prairie volleyball and Camas cross country teams, which earlier won championships.

We don’t know whether the Camas football squad can join those clubs in winning the big prize, but a 51-17 halftime lead in Saturday’s quarterfinal suggests that the Papermakers will be difficult to beat.

Next week, Camas faces defending champion Skyline and USC-bound quarterback Max Browne. Best of luck to the Papermakers; may they continue to carry the banner for Southwest Washington.

2

As expected by anybody who examined the schedule prior to the season, the Washington Huskies are closing the year on a hot streak. UW (7-4) has won four in a row, including Saturday against Colorado, which marginally qualifies as a Pac-12 program.

While Washington’s success has been dependent on the quality of the opponent, Steve Sarkisian deserves some kudos. The Huskies could have gone into the tank after an embarrassment at Arizona, but they persevered.
